The H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts class at the Newark Police Academy recently kicked off a clothing drive for the local Salvation Army. The students leaned how every little bit helps and that by working together as a team they can create a big difference in the world.

H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts — We're Fighting To Make A Difference!
In addition to a short film showcasing all of their volunteer efforts over the semester the H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts class and Citizen Schools students treated the Newark First Avenue families to a Martial Arts performance complete with board breaks!
The students "earn" their Martial Arts lessons by giving back to the community/world. The students choose each cause, the class votes and as a team they fight to make a difference! This past semester the students:
- Cleaned up 2 acres of land at the local Branch Brook Park.
- Helped the local Boys and Girls Club by teaching the Kindergarten through Fourth grade students the Martial Arts.
- Conducted a school wide can food drive for the New Jersey Food Bank resulting in collecting 730 pounds of food.
- Writing letters to cheer up the Soldiers

The H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts class at the Newark Police Academy had a bit of Martial Art fun. Sensei Jim showed his appreciation for all the hard work the students put into their letters to the Soldiers by teaching the class. As everyone probably knows by now the students perform volunteer work to "earn" their Martial Arts lessons.

The H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts class and Citizen Schools Students conducted a school wide can food drive for the New Jersey Food Bank as a result one of H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts supporters, Mally Beauty, donated an X-Box 360 with Kinect, Kinect Sports and Kinect Adventures games!
One lucky winner was chosen at random from the homeroom class that brought in the most cans of food.
Thank you to ALL of the students at the Newark First Avenue School for conducting this very successful food drive. You made a big difference! The First Avenue School collected nearly 800 cans of food resulting 730 pounds of food being delivered to the New Jersey Food Bank just in time for the Holidays.
Much appreciation is given to Miss Jackson and the Citizen Schools Staff for all your efforts.
A very special thank you to Mally Beauty for being such an amazing company. Without your generosity the H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts program may not have begun. Thank you for all your generosity, support and belief in H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts!

The H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts class and Citizen Schools Students had a chance to give back to the community by teaching a free Martial Arts class to the Newark First Avenue Boys and Girls Club members.
We had over 60 Kindergarten through Fourth Grade students participate in the class. The H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts class took over for the afternoon giving the Boys and Girls Club staff a little break from teaching. The students had a great time with many of the parents and teachers being amazed at just how much the students accomplished in a short time.
In addition our regular students had a chance to conduct the class and "teach back" which helps them to reinforce what they have learned. Great job team!!!! Keep up the good work!!!

The H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts class at the Newark Police Academy recently started a letter writing camping to the Soldiers. All of our students did a great job with their letters but we were really impressed with Anthony's efforts. Anthony didn't just write one letter he wrote three!
Anthony (who prefers to be called Tony, much to Mom and Dad's surprise) put his heart into creating these letters complete with decorating them! It was easy for all of to see how much time and effort he put into them.
Great job Tony!

The H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts class at the Newark Police Academy put together letters to help cheer up the Soldiers. They learned that something as simple as a letter can make a big difference in the world, that by showing our appreciation to the troops we will hopefully bring a smile to their faces and hearts.
The students did a great job writing and decorating their letters. Good job team!
Once again, our thanks to the Troops. We wish all of you safe passage to your friends and loved ones.
Be safe!

The H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts class and Citizen Schools Students put together a letter writing campaign to the Soldiers.
I want to thank the Soldiers for your service to our Country and ultimately us, the Citizens of the United States. For this we all owe you our gratitude and I wish more individuals took time out of their days to acknowledge this.
I stress to all of my students just how dangerous your jobs are and the reason each of you are a Hero in your own right is because of your willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of our Country and everyone's loved ones not just your own. Thank you. It cannot be said enough, thank you again and I wish you a safe return to your famlies. Keep your spirit strong, know that many of us truly appreciate what you are doing.

H.E.A.R.T. is a free Community Martial Arts Program. What is unique about this program is that the children have agreed to perform volunteer service work for other local and national nonprofit organizations to "earn" their lessons. The children will truly be building their Spirit/Character as they give from their hearts to help others. H.E.A.R.T. represents Honor, Equality, Appreciation, Respect, and Trust, it is our hope to teach the children that they are empowered to make changes in their lives as well as the community in which they reside. H.E.A.R.T. — Martial Arts — We're Fighting To Make A Difference. H.E.A.R.T. was founded by Sensei Jim Hainis in an effort to give to others what was so freely given to him by his past teachers and instructors. Sensei Jim has trained in the Martial Arts since he was young child first as a Judoka and later as Karate practitioner and later still as a novice grappler. In all Sensei Jim has been practicing, and continues to practice, the Mart Arts for 26 years. In addition, Sensei Jim has been teaching for the past 16 years, sharing his passion with everyone around him.
