Kihon Sono Ni - Basic Kata Number Two

H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts and Citizen Schools students have been practicing the second Kata (Form or Formal Movement Exercise) which will be part of our WOW! performance.

The second Kata in Japanses is called " Kihon Sono Ni" or Basic Kata Number Two, the main difference between the first and second Kata are the kicks. In the first Kata the kicks are all straight (Mae Geri) Front Snap Kicks but the second Kata introduces the roudhouse kick (a circular technique) to the back kick (Ushiro Geri). This combination helps the students to connect/flow a straight technique to round technique, thus learning how to vary their angle of attack/approach.

Branch Brook Park Volunteer Work

The H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts and Citizen Schools students accomplished an amazing amount of work for the Branch Brook Park Alliance in a short amount of time. Our team Along with the Alyson Nash and Dan Salvante (from Branch Brook Park Alliance) helped to clean up several areas in the park. From picking up trash to cleaning the Cherrie Blossom Tree beds from weeds there was plenty of work to go around, especially after finding out that Branch Brook Park has over 4,100 Cherrie Blossom Trees!

The students truly appreciated being out in a beautiful park and taking in the fresh air after a long day at school. Perhaps, more importantly though, they learned that it is everyone's responsibility to take care of the park/Earth. Thank Branch Brook Team for making this wonderful learning opportunity possible for our students!

2010 Fall Citizen Schools Apprentice Day Fair

The Citizen Schools students were introduced to the next round of H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts. It was an exciting time as Citizen Schools students were presented H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts. mission which is to give from the heart and teach the Martial Arts for free to those willing to "earn" it by giving from each of their hearts to something they are passionate about by way of volunteer work.

The new students learned first hand from former H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts students about they difference the community service work made not only for the receptive causes and charities but the difference the program made within each of them. If that was not enough to get the new students excited they surely had smiles on their face when Sensei Jim taught them all how to make a proper Hammer Fist. To top it all off a good number of the students got to test their new found technique by breaking the boards that were donated by the local, Bloomfield, Home Depot. Once again a special thank you to Manager Pete and his team over at the Home Depot, we truly appreciate all your help with making the Apprentice Day Fair a great event for all!
