2010 Fall Citizen Schools Apprentice Day Fair

The Citizen Schools students were introduced to the next round of H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts. It was an exciting time as Citizen Schools students were presented H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts. mission which is to give from the heart and teach the Martial Arts for free to those willing to "earn" it by giving from each of their hearts to something they are passionate about by way of volunteer work.

The new students learned first hand from former H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts students about they difference the community service work made not only for the receptive causes and charities but the difference the program made within each of them. If that was not enough to get the new students excited they surely had smiles on their face when Sensei Jim taught them all how to make a proper Hammer Fist. To top it all off a good number of the students got to test their new found technique by breaking the boards that were donated by the local, Bloomfield, Home Depot. Once again a special thank you to Manager Pete and his team over at the Home Depot, we truly appreciate all your help with making the Apprentice Day Fair a great event for all!

A Picnic With A Lot Of H.E.A.R.T.

I want to thank all of the parents and students who made it to the H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts picnic on July the 10th. Despite the threat of rain, which held off the entire day, we had a nice turn out.

We did manage to fit in a little Martial Arts practice in between all the eating and games! We had to prepare for our upcoming Newark Weequahic Park Demonstration the following weekend, which the students did a great job at!

Once again, my many thanks to everyone for all their hard work. I hope everyone made some nice memories that will last for years to come.

I want to send out a special thank you to Marlene's Mom for providing the pictures for this blog post and a very special thank you to the Camacho Family for all their help with packing/cleaning up at the end of the day.

Please post comments and don't forget to share the blog with friends and family.

Newark Weequahic Park Ice Breaking Demonstration

The Newark Weequahic Park Demonstration went off without a hitch, it was a beautiful, HOT, summer day. The audience and students were entertained by Sensei Jim who broke 300 pounds of ice to everyone's amazement and joy. Actually, everyone was really happy that Sensei Jim broke the ice so that they could use it in their coolers!

Enjoy!

Newark Weequahic Park Demonstration

The H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts students did a great job at the Weequahic Park demonstration this past Saturday July the 17th. The community learned how all of the students perform volunteer service work to "earn" their Martial Arts lessons. They also learned that the H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts class has helped out a wide variety of nonprofit organizations ranging from the Salvation Army to Soles 4 Souls.

I want to thank all of the parents and students who put the extra effort into this demonstration for the community. I know it was a hot day and I am really proud of everyone's efforts. I hope that we will have another demonstration before the summer ends which will give us the perfect reason to have another picnic for everyone! I heard through the grapevine that some of the students who couldn't make the last picnic are hoping that we have another one... maybe we can make that wish come true!

Once again, my many thanks to everyone for all their hard work. I hope everyone made some nice memories that will last for years to come. Post comments and don't forget to share the blog with friends and family.

Letters And Care Packages To The Soldiers

A message to the Soldiers from the H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts and Citizen Schools class:

First and foremost my students and I wish you safe passage home to your friends and family. For those students too young to understand why a soldier is a hero we have helped them to understand the sacrifice that you make on behalf of all of us and what you, personally, put on the line to secure our and others way of life is your own life. We have stressed to our students that by writing these letters and making these drawings that they could, and we certainly hope that it does, bring you a moment of joy that helps to strengthen your resolve.

I commend and admire you for what you do to truly make a difference in our lives. In my own small way I am trying to make a difference in the lives of my students as well as the community in which we reside and beyond. My actions pale in comparison to yours. If time permits, I think if my students were to receive letters from you or see your posts/comments on our site it would help them to understand that what they and you are doing is something very "real".

Stay strong.

Be safe.

Sincerely,

Sensei Jim and the H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts Class

H.E.A.R.T. Spring 2010 WOW! Performance

Once again H.E.A.R.T. Martial Arts and Citizen Schools put on a great WOW! performance. The Spring 2010 semester has been an incredible experience for all and I hope that it has made a lasting impression that will bring back fond memories for years to come.

I want to express how proud I am of the students and their many achievements, including:

- Collecting over 60 pair of shoes for Soles4Souls

- Creating over 50 handmade toys for the JAC Animal Shelter

- Collecting over a 100 pounds of dog food for the JAC Animal Shelter

- Collecting over 50 pounds of cat food for the JAC Animal Shelter

- Writing dozens of letters to our Soldiers overseas

- Creating a 3 course meal for all the residents at the Sierra House Women's Shelter

If that wasn't enough the students also learned:

- Kata 1 - Kihon Sono Ichi

- Kata 2 - Kihon Sono Ni

- Kata 3 - Kihon Sono San

- Kata 4 - Kihon Sono Yon - Well sort of, the students now know in their hearts that they need to practice this kata more but I had to let them at least try it. Perfect practice makes perfect not just practice, you have to do your best every time!

The students learned the value of teamwork and they experienced first hand that they can make a difference in themselves as well as the world around them.

I hope those of you viewing this share it with all your friends and family, please pass the word on about what we are trying to accomplish and remember...
